Notes: A Conversation With Jony Ive
When you make something with love and with care, [...], it's a way of expressing our gratitude to the species.
On how design should be humane#
- What we make stands testament to who we are; our values, our obsessions, our care.
- Making something with love and care is a way of expressing gratitude to our species.
- We can feel when something's been made with care. And we definitely notice carelessness when we see it.
On the hard truths of design#
- Simple design is not just about removing clutter. An uncluttered product isn't necessarily a simple one.
- We need more joy, humour and delight in our products.
- Everyone has an opinion about design, but not all opinions have the same weight.
On design in the product-building process#
- Focusing only on what can be easily measured is focusing only on a partial truth. Don't ignore the feel of the experience.
- Reframe "quality vs speed" as: How can we work efficiently and still make something breathtaking?
On building and leading creative teams#
- Genuinely trust, care about and love each other. This makes you actually listen to each other's ideas.
- What kills most ideas is people desperate to express an opinion. And opinions aren't ideas.
- Encourage making things for one another, even small things like breakfast. It builds the right motivation.
